Get On Up

Back in July, I got the immense pleasure of getting to cover the Get On Up screening in Madison and writing a story about it for Social South Magazine! Get On Up is a movie about musical legend James Brown that was filmed largely in Mississippi, so it was VERY exciting to get to see how well Mississippi did in representing places all over the world!

Not only did we (my wonderful hubs/sidekick for the day, Price, and I) get to see the movie a week before it came out in theaters, but we got to interview Chadwick Boseman, the actor who did a KILLER job of playing James Brown, and Tate Taylor, the director! (Tate is from MS, and also directed The Help!)

As you can see, we felt super official with our MEDIA passes! There was even a picture of us interviewing Chad tweeted by the Clarion Ledger! And of course I had to take a selfie, which turned out horribly, with ol’ Chad in the background! He was extremely nice, by the way!

After learning so much about James Brown and the film itself that warm afternoon at the Madison theatre, writing the story was a blast. You can check it out in the latest issue of Social South!!

You can read the full story more easily HERE! You can also see a few more pics from the big day! I hope you enjoy learning a little more about James Brown and Mississippi’s growing film industry as much as I did! 🙂

Have a wonderful week and I’ll talk to y’all soon!

A Story About Elvis

I’m pretty excited about the current issue of Social South…

Social South May/June Issue // THE HIVE

…Because I got to write the cover story!!!! AHHH! This is huge for me! 🙂

The story is about a guy who you might have heard of before… His name is Elvis! But the story is also about a guy named Keith who the outside world is not as familiar with. Keith is a really cool guy. He has a HUUUUGE collection of never-before-published Elvis photos, so many of these photos are what you’ll see when you read the story in Social South! Even the cover photo had never before been published!

I learned so much about The King that I’d never even heard before. I grew to really appreciate where he came from after a two-hour visit with Keith, his daughter Tiffany, and Spectacles Gallerist Lucy (who you’ll learn more about in the story.) They taught me so much! But I’ll let you read more about that in the piece, which you can get to HERE on pages 29-32! 🙂

Elvis Unseen // THE HIVE

Keith ended up having limited edition prints of some of the negatives he has of Elvis produced to sell to help fund local child advocacy centers, which I thought was so nice! What was even nicer is that he just GAVE me three of the prints! I absolutely love them. They are so special, especially after learning about what a tender-hearted man Elvis was. The fact that they’ve never been seen by the outside world makes them extra special.

I think this one might be my favorite. He just looks so chill!

Anyway, enough of me talking! I hope you enjoy the story (HERE, pages 29-32), and more importantly, I hope you have a great day!

Craft Cocktailing

I recently had the pleasure of writing a story for Social South magazine about the ultra cool new Jackson cocktail bar called The Apothecary at Brent’s Drugs!

Getting to visit with the proprietors over an exquisitely crafted prohibition-era-inspired cocktail definitely tops my “fun at work” list as of late, and learning about the thought put into Apothecary, both in the design and in the menu, gives me a huge appreciation for this lovely speakeasy-style lounge!

Not only did I get to write the story, but I got to take pictures as well. Here are a few of my faves!

Each of the cocktails at Apothecary has a story behind it. And they’re all made from scratch to order, so the freshness of what they serve really sets them apart!

For the whole story, check out the latest issue of Social South! I hope you like what you read! 🙂 And even moreso, I hope you like what you taste on your upcoming visit to Apothecary!!!

(I can almost guarantee you’re going to love it in there…)

I hope you have a great rest of the day!!

September Reads

Since September is SUCH a huge month when it comes to publications, I ended up blocking off about an hour last night to get caught up on some of my fave reads, plus a couple of randoms!

I do not consider myself a fashion expert by any means, but I do love it, so I loved all the fall fashion spreads that come with “The September Issue” of several of these pubs!

Others, like Social South and Crate & Barrel (the latter of which is hardly a magazine, but I still get a little too excited whenever I get a new catalog…), aren’t fashion focused but I still HEART them! All of this catching up was done over a decaf iced coffee while my nails were drying. An hour of PURE BLISS, I’d say! 🙂

September Reads // The Hive

1. Harper’s Bazaar had their biggest issue yet this month and of course it’s completely fabulous! SJP was dazzling on the cover. I particularly loved the shout out to maroon! (Or wine as they say… But I’m certain there’s a bulldog on their editorial team somewhere! ;))

I also liked their list of 10 tricks to update your style.

10 Tips to update your look this fall // Harper's Bazaar via The Hive

Here were a few faves!

2. Dare to wear your new ankle boots with bare legs, or perhaps a nice pair of cashmere ankle socks. (Keep them tonal–no prints, please!)

9. Pretty, grown-up makeup complements the season’s sophistication. The things that will get you there the fastest? A sweep of black eyeliner and a red lip. Not necessarily worn in tandem.

10. Hair matters too. Soft, loose, touchable waves–a more relaxed Lauren Bacall look, as seen at Hermes–add a feminine nuance to more tailored styles.

2. Matchbook Magazine is an online magazine that is a hybrid fashion/interiors mag. It’s just lovely!! My favorite page in the whole issue is page 50. This chick is GORGEOUS. Her whole spread is fab. It’s called Desert Darling.

Also LOVED this page. The color story and subject matter are so attractive!

3. Lastly… It’s no secret that I LOVE Rue Magazine. I’ve blogged about them many a time before! They’re also a hybrid between interiors and fashion, plus they pepper in some entertaining too which is perfect! The Wanderlust Wardrobe spread begins on page 147 and is absolutely GORGE!! And since I almost always have wanderlust… This spread was totally calling my name. Here are a couple of my favorite images…

Beautiful, right?!

And that about does it! What are your favorite September reads?
Hope you all have a GREAT weekend!!

The Swag

Yesterday was a great day! I got the swag for the fashion show (which I talked about here) completed! 158 cards, all hand painted and hand assembled, are packaged up and ready to go in the swag bags for Social South’s fashion show tomorrow!

A bunch of cards, all lined up!

A bunch of cards, all lined up!

Katie (sis-in-law) came over last night and we (a) made supper with the boys and got caught up on The Bible on the History Channel (by the way, have y’all been watching that? SO GOOD!) and (b) stuffed TLB info cards and Arco Avenue coupons in with the note cards.

The final product turned out to be really cute! I’m so honored that Katie wanted to give TLB cards as her swag!! 🙂 And she’s about to have a bunch of new cards for sale at her store, so if you live in the area, feel free to swing by and pick some up! 🙂

Are any of you going to the Social South Unzipped fashion show?

Have an AWESOME Thursday!!

Fashion + Swag

I’m so excited!!!!

So the current exclusive retailer for The Lovely Bee, my sister in law’s gorgeous store Arco Avenue, has asked if she could give Lovely Bee cards as swag for an upcoming Social South fashion show! (Swag = something fun to put in goodie bags for all those who attend the show.) I’m SO HONORED!! And so far, I’ve had a lot of fun getting these together!

I’m still in the beginning phases of production, but I’m gonna get ’em done and they’re gonna be awesome!

For those of you who are in the Jackson area and looking for something really fun to do on Friday, may I suggest getting a ticket to the show?! You’ll get to see over 100 looks from local shops (including Arco Avenue!), enjoy lunch and cocktails, and get a swag bag (with a TLB card in it! :))

Fashion Show | Social South

Social South knows how to put on a event, so I’m sure it’s going to be the best fashion show this city has ever seen. Can’t wait to see the recap!!
