My Favorite Room :: Our Dining Room

I’m excited to share another post in the My Favorite Room series from my darling friend and fellow collaborator for The Lovely Buzz, Sara Beth!

(In case you’re not sure what this series is all about, it’s where I ask some of my favorite bloggers to give us a little insight into their favorite room in their house!)

This series has been so much fun for me because I love seeing the unique interior styles of those whose blogs I so admire! 🙂 And Sara Beth does not disappoint! I hope you enjoy learning about her favorite room as much as I did!!

1. What is your favorite room in your house?

My favorite room is our dining room. It’s semi-open to our living room, but it has a style that is different from the rest of our house. I wanted it to have its own unique feel. It’s a little fancier, but it still has a warmth about it that hopefully says, “Come dine with us for awhile. Let’s sip wine and eat well and have great conversation.”

2. What about this room makes you love it so much?

I love the mood of the room. We mixed traditional furniture and silhouettes with modern textures and color. I wanted the room to feel different than the rest of our house but still flow well. It has the most contrast of any room in our house, and I love the bold paint color mixed with some of the softer, more elegant pieces.

Another reason I love this room is because it contains a lot of our most prized possessions. It holds my grandmother’s heirloom china, a repurposed wash basin that was my great-grandmother’s, a wine rack that was my grandfather’s… The table and china cabinet belonged to family, as well. I feel like a lot of family history meets in this room and gives it character and backbone, and that makes me really happy.

It’s also the place where life stops, and relationships are undistracted. We have formal dinner parties around this table with china and crystal, and we also have dinner just the two of us, most every night. We unwind here with no cell phones. We savor the meal and slow down. We both love to cook, so it’s nice to spend some time cooking and then sit down and actually enjoy it. Some of our best conversations happen here. Something about this room just stops the rest of the world for me…even if just for a few minutes.

3. If you had to pick your favorite element in the room, what would it be?

Definitely the painting on the wall by Brent Funderburk. It’s called “Beyond”. It’s special for many reasons, one being my love for dance. I love the abstract elements, as well. It really leaves room for the imagination and for symbolism. My husband bought this painting for me secretly and surprised me with it in a gallery on Mississippi State’s campus on the anniversary of our engagement. He and Brent were in on it together, planning and scheming the perfect reveal. Jonathan knew that I loved Brent’s watercolors (and he was one of my favorite professors in school). He had followed his work since we were in college together.

On the day of the reveal, he casually mentioned that we should stop by and see Brent at the gallery on campus. We walked in and Brent gave me a detailed tour of the new gallery, and finally, his work. I was in awe. I read every single title, and when I got to this one, the tag read, “Collection of Mrs. Sara Beth Parks Cobb.” It took it a second to compute, but once I understood that it was mine, I lost it and cried like a baby. It was one of the most thoughtful things anyone has ever done for me, and it was my first real piece of nice artwork. I will treasure it for always. I’m glad I married a romantic. 🙂

4. What’s your paint color?

It’s called Bark, and it’s Valspar Waverly Series.

5. At what time of day do you most enjoy being in this room?

The light is beautiful in the morning. I love to open these curtains before I start the coffee pot and look out at the new day. But I enjoy evenings here the most. There’s nothing like finishing a long day with a good meal around the table.

6. If you had to describe this room in three words, what would they be?

Eclectic, Special, Romantic.

7. Anything else you want us to know about your favorite room?

We have put a lot of love into this room. The furniture was handed down to us from Jonathan’s side of the family, and it was in almost perfect condition. The chairs had some nicks here and there, so we sanded the places that needed to be fixed and painted them black to give them a modern pop and break up some of the cherry. I recovered the seats with an art-nouveau inspired fabric that is yellow and off-white.

My mother gave me my great grandmother’s old wash basin table. I had always loved the piece, and my great grandmother and I were very close. The paint was chipping and it needed to fixed up, so my husband stripped it and painted it a beautiful glossy black. We loved the idea of getting some newer hardware that had an antique feel to them, so we got some glass hardware pieces from Restoration Hardware. We had some space in our dining room, and we thought it make for a fun little bar space. We’ve enjoyed it so much, and it’s stocked with vintage drink glasses that belonged to my grandfather. My husband is also into mixing classic cocktails, so he loves to use the vintage drink mix book that one of our dear friend’s gave us. We feel very “Mad Men” when we’re at our little refurbished bar.

I really love decorating the dining room for Christmas, too! I like to play with different tablescapes and hang Christmas cards all around the room. It just gets me in the Christmas spirit!

My Favorite Room :: Sam’s Nursery

Today’s edition in the My Favorite Room series is from my darling friend Katie from A Beautiful Blog! Katie and I used to work together at SummerHouse until she moved back to Birmingham a couple of years ago, but thanks to blogging, we’re able to keep up with each other really well! 🙂

Her favorite room is her son Sam’s nursery… I’m in love!! Check it out…

1. What is your favorite room in your house?
My son Sam’s nursery is definitely my new favorite room, not to mention the only room that I can say with confidence is finished in our home!

2. What about this room makes you love it so much?
I love the light this room gets during the day! It is such a happy room, and some of my best organization can be found here (and these days, only here!). I also love the sweet baby smell it has 🙂

3. If you had to pick your favorite element in the room, what would it be?
I would have to say the dresser and crib. Not really because they “make” the room, but because my hubby and I had one of our best days tripping it to Ikea. We got the dresser, crib, picture frames and window panels for a steal! We grabbed lunch at West Egg before heading back to Birmingham (highly recommend!). Once home we started assembling the furniture while listening to the Braves opening game against the Cubs and eating $5 pizza. Literally one of my best memories.

4. What’s your paint color?
Sherwin-Williams Useful Gray.

5. At what time of day do you most enjoy being in this room?
I love the early mornings in Sam’s room. The soft light is welcomed company for those early morning diaper changes 🙂

6. If you had to describe this room in three words, what would they be?
Playful. Sentimental. Peaceful. (Playful and peaceful are conflicting words I know, but depending what we are doing in the room they both apply!)

7. Anything else you want us to know about your favorite room?
Designing this room was unlike designing any other room in our house. I like for our home to evolve over time and not to look like everything was purchased in one fell swoop. However, in this situation I had 9 months! I set a budget, decided on what items I could spurge on and which ones I could get for a deal (hello Ikea!). The glider ended up being our most expensive purchase and so glad we decided to do so because I spend a lot of time in that chair 🙂 We have had the best time watching Sam grow and enjoy his room!

Thank you so much Katie!!! I love the theme of this room and Katie’s color choices. Seriously, such a cute room.

My Favorite Room :: Eleanor’s Nursery

Last week was the beginning of a new column here on { THE HIVE } called My Favorite Room! I started it off with my own favorite room, and now my lovely blogger friend (and real life friend, too!) Mary Straton from Olive You, Darling is chiming in on her favorite room! It’s absolutely adorable, so let’s get started, shall we?!

1. What is your favorite room in your house?

First of all, I’m so flattered Laurel asked me to guest post on The Lovely Bee! It’s clear she has yet to figure out that she is much cooler than me. (Don’t tell her.) Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk my favorite room. My daughter Eleanor’s nursery is the only complete dwelling in the house, so by default, that’s the only room I was willing to share. I’m a chronic procrastinator, but when you have a ticking time bomb in your belly, it kind of makes you stay on task. I must also ask that you forgive the poor quality of some of these pictures as I am no photog.

2. What about this room makes you love it so much?

I don’t know about y’all, but I love to peruse design blogs. Anytime I’m bored at work (read: more often than I care to admit), I pass time by trolling through my favorites, one of which is dedicated to nurseries and kid rooms. So as soon as we found out we were having a girl, I created a secret Pinterest board (follow me here!) with this room as the inspiration. My husband Kell was adamant that her room not be pink, and I wanted something not-too-sweet that could grow with her with a few changes here and there.

3. If you had to pick your favorite element in the room, what would it be?

Choosing a favorite is tough! This room was a total labor of love, literally. I did so many DIYs in this room because we were on a budget, but it really made it special and unique. And it was really fun to think I was doing it all for a little nugget I didn’t even know! But I think my favorite parts are the copycat mobile above her crib, the door hanger I made for the hospital and the dresser/changing table. I got it at our local flea market for a steal, and I didn’t have to do a thing to it. That’s what mama’s talking about. Oh, and the valance for the curtain! It made me get out my sewing machine again.

4. What’s your paint color?

Again, taking inspiration from the Lay Baby Lay nursery, I tried to best match the color and ended up going with Benjamin Moore “Ocean Spray.” I just now noticed that it sounds like a cranberry juice brand. Huh.

5. At what time of day do you most enjoy being in this room?

Right now, I love being in this room whenever Eleanor is in it playing. After I pick her up from school in the afternoon, Kell and I sit in the room with her and watch her play and crawl and put various items in her mouth. But months ago, when she was much smaller, I loved sitting in the dark and rocking her to sleep. I hope she grows up loving this room as much as I do.

6. If you had to describe this room in three words, what would they be?

Calming, eclectic, girly

7. Anything else you want us to know about your favorite room?

I think it’s so important to remember that if you have your sights set on high-dollar design, it’s totally possible to create the same look on a budget if you’re willing to spend some time at the craft table or on the internet looking for good deals. Pinterest is full of great tutorials, so take inspiration from things and places you love and make them your own! If you’d like to know more about Eleanor’s nursery, check out my post on that very subject for every little detail plus DIY links!

A big thank you to the lovely Laurel for asking me to post! I can’t wait to see more of the favorite rooms from all over!

Have a wonderful Thursday!

Hurry Up, Spring! { Guest Post }

Hey y’all! Today’s post is going to be a little short because of how busy I am at the moment. As of late, I’ve been browsing my favorite store’s websites, debating on shoes and spring dresses I want but really shouldn’t buy. It’s rather annoying. Spring’s a comin’ but my wardrobe cannot keep up to save its life.

And to make matters worse, I keep having these amazing photo shoots, full of little spring reminders. Like, look at these:

If this doesn’t make you crave the spring season, I don’t know what does.

Until next time, be sure to follow me on Twitter, Facebook, and on my blog, of course, Coffee Rings & Southern Things!
